For channel ORANGE, Frank Ocean studied R&B legends including Stevie Wonder. Now the Odd Future singer is soaking up inspiration from ’60s bands including The Beatles and Beach Boys for his next album.
While being honored as one of TIME‘s 100 Most Influential People in the World earlier this week, Ocean shed some light on the sequel to his Grammy-winningalbum.
“When I was making the first [album] there were a group of artists that I listened to, just for inspiration and to absorb the energies,” he told MTV News. “It was a lot of Stevie Wonder, and this time it’s a lot of Beach Boys and Beatles and whatnot, so we’ll see how it trickles into the music and the final product. I can’t say much other than that.”
In an interview with BBC Radio 1 in February, he revealed that he was 10-11 songs into the project. He was planning a trip to the island of Bora Bora torecord more.
He hinted at the direction. “At the end of channel ORANGE, there’s ‘Golden Girl’ and it’s this beach scene, and I kind of want to extend that feel into the nextrecord all together, kinda make it that theme,” he said.
In between hanging out with Justin Timberlake and Vice President Joe Biden, Ocean is eyeing a tour for later this year.

Beyoncé soaks up the sun in her scorching-hot commercial for H&M’s summer collection. In the fun and flirtatious ad, which was directed by Jonas Åkerlund (“Telephone”) in Nassau in the Bahamas, Mrs. Carter dances in the sand and splashes in the sea while modeling swimwear and beachwear. She sports a black bikini on the sandy shores, performs choreography in a flowing sun dress, and gets soaking wet in a bodycon dress.
The 90-second spot also features the debut of her Sia-penned song, “Standing on the Sun.” The clothing will be available beginning in May at H&M storesworldwide and online.
“I’ve always liked H&M’s focus on fun and affordable fashion,” says Beyoncé. “I really loved the concept we collaborated on to explore the different emotions of women represented by the four elements—fire, water, earth and wind. It was a beautiful shoot on a tropical island. It felt more like making a video than a commercial.”
It looks like Jay-Z may not be the only one venturing into the sports market. After recently selling his share of the Brooklyn Nets so that he can open a sports representation agency, Snoop Lion was just questioned by Boombox about a similar situation. Snoop has long since been involved in sports, namely his football team, so the inquiry wasn’t exactly out of left field. His response when asked:
Maybe the sports marketing agency as far as getting players to sign with me as a sports agent — and there’s a lot of kids that come out of my football league that are venturing off into the NFL and different sports and they’re going to need direction and management so that may be a field that I want to venture in.
Will this be another trend amongst veterans of the music industry? I guess we’ll have to see. But it can’t be worse than artists starting their own fashion labels, right? In related news, Snoop Lion’s highly-anticipated reggae debut Reincarnated is out today.
