“Our Wednesday, June 17th Hometown Hero is Devona Hickerson of Taylorsville. Devona is a 5th grade teacher at Taylorsville Elementary. She was nominated by her niece, Cynthia. Cynthia says, “Devona has been sewing masks for friends, family, students, first responders – anyone that needs them. She uses her own money, supplemented by some donations, to make over 400 masks since the pandemic began. She also helps feed kids and make sure they have supplies if they can’t afford them. She has organized parades to lift morale in the community and she organized a prayer walk last Friday. She has done all of this while her husband battles cancer. She is truly a hero.”
